In this workshop, we’re getting festive and having some fun with sculptural ceramic Christmas trees.
You’ll learn how to create a range of tree forms on the wheel, from tall and skinny trees to short, chunky shapes and hollow luminaries designed to glow beautifully with candlelight.
We’ll start with preparing and centring reclaimed clay, before moving into pulling consistent cylinders and shaping your forms. You’ll learn how to create both open-base and closed hollow trees, including how to safely close your forms without collapse.
From there, we’ll explore how to create organic overhangs that mimic branches, giving your trees their characteristic sculptural shape. You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with texture, carved layers, cut-outs and holes to create playful details and beautiful light effects.
And because these pieces don’t need to be perfectly symmetrical, we’ll look at how to refine wobbles while still embracing the organic character of handmade pottery.
This workshop is perfect for adventurous beginners and intermediate potters who want to push their wheel skills while creating something fun, festive and a little bit different.
